Yeah, that is very identifiable yeah I hear that in cocktail clubs and hot jazz settings and sometimes you hear it in grocery stores. maybe that’s the best way to approach this is by splitting it into two pieces and say let’s try it first as a slow ballad sound that kind of soft you know not soft maybe more emotional, you know, and then we’ll also try to give us give away some tips that we can do to make it sound a little bit more swinging. right and maybe I can see that those might even come together. we can set it up to perform this in a way that was a ballad first and then swinging in the end it’s a nice way to set up a tune.

Maybe we will do it that way If you’re going to do it slow, let’s talk about that one first. at that point you kind of sticking to chords in the left hand and more noodling in the right-hand. yeah I mean this song has those big holes in it. If you check it out, nothing space space space space space what we do with a space well we tastefully fill it.

Or in some cases not so tasteful. I know Roger William’s huge hit he had the Now the signature hook of that tune. He would make this huge run that would come down yeah I think that was sort of a musical leaves falling off the tree. clearly I think that was the the allegory there is that you are hearing leaves coming down but let’s give away just one trick let’s get our key together first. Gm G minor which has the same Black Keys as in Bb let’s just play G minor scale.

The other white keys except for Bb and Eb It is important know that scale if you are going to do that runs because they are solidly within those 7 notes. you can noodle your way down … Let’s do the tune and then we can do some kinda noodle down, I think he did some thirds … Let’s give that away real slowly right in the middle so we make sure we get on the camera there. you said minor thirds so do the tune and play it down low here. so I’m going to stay in those seven notes and start on the Eb and skip the next note. anything I asked if the next No and then come down and do it again. So some of them are minor thirds and some of them are major thirds. I’m just sticking with the key. Let’s say we are in C major. All the white keys. So you are just following those notes that you gave way the G minor scale and you are just playing them in thirds.

Do slowly one octave like that. okay so really it is just a function of I can’t because I don’t have good enough chops You just need to sit there and get good at going … but you know it doesn’t have to be that complicated any kind of a little scale passage if you can play this scale, which isn’t hard to finger, you can just noodle around that’s nice that works nicely for leaves falling whatever, just play those notes well that sound nice so it happens during the break of the melody you know falling leaves, a nice run Which means you do have to wear multiple personalities, that’s tricky you know you had to be the chord guy the melody guy and the fill guy – bass player you know the guitar player and the singer singing now you’re the trumpet in between or something. You have to think in segments like that okay that brings up a point, people sometimes say that they want to play all really complicated and big and sound full what they do is just play too many notes and are trying to do too much and it’s true that a really full performance has a lot going on but it’s in different roles sure here’s the bass, here’s the Harmony here’s the melody here are the fills.

We are taking advantage of the fact that piano is one of the only instruments we really have access to the full orchestra I think that we are after the sound of imitating a whole band interesting that is the sound we are after. that’s a good way to think about that mentally I gotta get a bass player in there you gotta get that stuff in the middle the harmonic area and you get the melodic line up on top right and everything in between the melody like this like four different instruments being imitated you should think that way that’s a good mental approach to take on that.

Actually play just a couple measures if you would kinda in tempo with that slower feel OK so you really are just taking advantage of the spaces to noodle a little bit and get in there It is all right in the scale, those 7 notes. The counterpoint to that would be all right if we were doing this in a jazz trio are you were doing this yourself trying to make it swing, which this tune does very well what do you do differently other than just doing it a little faster you need to tell us about sometimes jazz tunes pick up a bit of vocabulary or tradition just by being passed around played by different guys in there starts to be a sort of a rendition that is the definitive way to play it even though that’s not the way the original went okay this is an example of that.

There are what we call kicks on this song where the the chords instead of being in the normal position which is the beginning of the measure chord, chord, chord, chord you hold back a little bit and play this little rhythm I’ve heard that a million times. that is a fun way to do it. You hear all the jazz recordings do that you get that little kick in there It is not always the exactly same rhythm. exactly the same rhythm but you can just hold back on that chord We changed the melody originally. We started out swinging. on that one, it’s the fourth kick. it tends to be open like … you fill it anyway you want. my version of thinking through it you hear a bass player walk one measure then you go back to head. so who knows who first did it that way but it seems like you call that on a gig everybody knows how to do that.

That’s just for the A section. the second section typically goes into a hard swing with like a walk and something and so there aren’t kicks in the second half okay so there aren’t kicks in the 2nd half typically. Let’s talk briefly – where we could talk ourselves into a huge black hole here so we’ll try to to keep it is on top of the water as possible about the chord changes – the fact that this goes 2 5’s or the circle of fifths all the time but your ear really follows the chord changes in this tune well right. It is very logical. in fact and that logic can inform the way you improvise if you play little patterns well let’s look at the chords first. okay so here’s the roots of the chords first. So here are the roots of the chords. the second chord is an F, 4 notes up and the next chord is a B-flat 4 notes up and the next chord is 4 notes up so these are all the roots i am playing. okay this next one … again you’re talking about the roots of the first four chords which starts on a Cm Starts on a C minor.

Again all these chords stick to the keys. There is nothing surprising about this chord. The flavor of the chord may be different could be minors or majors, or 7ths but the roots are all going from C, F, Bb to Eb exactly so it’s moving around the circle here. the next logical one would be a Ab but they cheat a little bit and play an A natural to keep us from getting out into outer space another fourth and then another fourth and then back home So it moves right around the circle of fifths okay and that’s what they sometimes people heard about it.

But people say that they don’t know about the circle the circle of fifths you spent a lot of time worrying about some other things but in essence it is a roadmap in the case of a lot of chord changes that chords have this tendency to move in those intervals. it makes it easy to memorize tunes when you realize that. right It is just a pattern. okay so now putting that into practice with this you were … well I was going to say that because that’s so patternistic, you can play patterns with your solo. I’ll just take a C minor 7 Can we take one step backwards to make it clearer for the viewers let’s just play the chord changes with nothing else.

Just the root and a chord in your right hand. so we will just follow I’ll do them all in root position F, Bb, EbMaj 7. Amin7b5 4 up to D, Then 4 up to G. those roots just kept going up by fourths. we could do it that way. my left hand … It just moves up by fourths. yeah okay that’s a good visual I think. all right now you are talking about a little pattern well it is nice to play sequences.

You hear this all the time in Bach. Bach is always doing this and then in 5 more places you can borrow from that and do a kind of sequence just taking the same idea and moving it down, even a really simple idea just taking patterns and moving them down. speaking of Bach I had a gig a couple of years ago that where the song came into play I was suppose to play all Baroque music ok they were in costume and in Renaissance clothes on and eating turkey legs, and carrying swords and they wanted to to hear a lot of Baroque music well jazz guys run out pretty short and so I just picked songs are paternalistic like this from the world of jazz and played them in a baroque way so instead of this I was… That sounds strangely familiar well I can show a simple way to to play a bass line on the second half for this you don’t have to know how to walk to play a nice bass line this is going to give us an idea for a great bass line to use so just playing roots on one and any other chord tone on beat 3 so we are playing half notes check it out So play the root each time on beat one and any other chord tone on the other ones That’s good for the viewers so what we’re talking about is walking a bass line getting to a point where you have something interesting to play It’s on your way to a walk in your left hand.

A good stepping stone is to say you need to play the root when the chord happens. when it on one or whatever but to get from one to the other just take any note in between those two. any chord tone – in any note in the chord That is a nice way to start that’s a good stepping stone to walking where you fill it all in. And that is more advanced and that has a lot more of this going on that is a great step 1 to get pushed off in that direction so that is helpful Lets hear you play this tune eyes open for a lot of what we talked about but if you would like to go to a solo we would love to hear that as well, good yeah, I like this tune.

I’m sorry can you try to play the beginning real slow and then work into the jazz. that’s a nice idea I’ll start down here low You are playing a little melody in your left hand well why not. Lesson 1 The Grand Staff | Free Beginner Piano

So, let’s get started. In ordering to play music we are going to be reading music on staff members and we’re gonna be reading notes and a note can be represented with only a circle that’s the most basic sort of note and we’ll call that a whole tone so in order to speak those mentions we need to understand a little bit about the forte-piano itself Piano notes are voices of course but they can be represented visually with these notes and sometimes the audio travels higher and sometimes the seem proceeds lower if you think about a fowl in a tree you can remember that notes that move up to the privilege are called high-pitched tones and if you think of something low-grade on the floor like perhaps elephants or a shark underwater these are the low-toned tones on the piano so anytime I refer to high-pitched mentions I’m talking about notes that are to the right and if I’m talking about low-grade tone I’m talking about notes that are to the left.

So if I visually represent these notes as high and low that helps us understand a little bit about the space all staff members works so let’s have a look at the notion of the staff members because this is where we’re going to be reading the music. Here you can see a faculty it’s actually two separate “staves” that’s the plural for staff. There is one staff at the top and staff members is these five lines and this set of five lines is for the right hand and this set of five pipelines, the lower situate, is for the left hand so each hand is going to be reading its own personnel. At the beginning of the staff there are some typifies. This represent is called the treble clef. If you are going to tune the clang on your stereo and you wanted to adjust the high-pitched clangs you would adjust the treble on your stereo so this treble clef is exactly what we represent the highest clangs on the on the staff for piano we typically play these clangs with the right hand because it is convenient and we are able to play-act these audios with the left hand because it’s very possible.

But, in general, and for getting started we’re going to think about use this treble clef on the top personnel for the right hand. If you are going to tune your stereo to adjust the low-toned tones you would adjust the bass on your on your fucking stereo and so bass entails low musics and low isn’t this direction so in order to represent these notes on a staff with simply five pipelines we are to be able throw them all on this treble personnel we needed another staff so we have this bass staff with a bass class at the beginning. so if I move down into this assortment here I typically use my left to right and so the lower faculty is presenting left-hand tones, especially at the beginning but the helping hand can play in this area so don’t get it in your head that bass faculty is always for left to right. The LOW personnel is the left-hand staff and the HIGH staff is the right hand staff. Awesome! So that will contribute under help you understand what these five paths are for but we still don’t have any mentions on all staff members, so let’s try some notes and like I said before a note truly can merely be a clique so I can draw one tone right here.

If you look at that note you’ll see that it has a line “re going through” the middle of the tone. We call this a “line note.” If I move it up simply a little bit it’s got a line on either side of it, so in the middle of this note there is no path. This is called a “space note” and as I move this note up all staff members it going on in here this series of cable tones and space mentions. So, I can place a tone on a line or I can space place a mention between two pipelines. We would call this one a line note because it has a line “re going through” the middle-of-the-road of it just like a bead on a string going right through the middle of the bead. Here we will call this one a room note, and again, it’s because there is only space inside this note there’s no cable “re going through” that tone. When we write music on all staff members “theres” five different places we could put cable tones on the staff: one on each line.

And there are four different places where we could write room notes within the staff: one in each room. When we move along the forte-piano we are beginning on a line or a room mention; in this case I started on a line tone. the note that’s beside it is the very closest tone( I’m going up in this case .) so these are both the same, they’re both on the same line , now if I go up the smaller sum I can. I go up to this first space. If I go up again I’m going to move from this same note up to the very next mention which will throw me on another pipeline. On pipeline two. I can move up another note and will this one be a line tone or a room mention? What do you think? I’m going to move up simply a tiny bit here and I’m going to be in space two. Again, I can take another step from space to up one lily-white key and end up on the next tone it’s a line tone and I think you can see that I’m building a motif here: every time I go up a mention I’m alternating between pipelines and spaces.

So this is the way the tones move on the staff. And what we’re going to be memorize to do is actually recognize each one of these pitches for its own note that it will be representing. So, rather than being in general moving up the tones, we are actually going to know specifically which notes each of these cable or space notes represents. So let’s have a look at your lesson materials. You can see here there’s a review of everything that I’ve just told you that music is written on the grand staff.

The top staff is for the right hand and that the bass faculty is for the left hand. Now, merely to clarify: when we’re playing piano music keys the treble staff and the bass staff aren’t only levitating beside each other. They’re actually connected. So I’m going to draw a line down here. That’s bar line. And then to show that this is played by the same musician there’s a brace in front of this barroom pipeline. So anytime you see this brace and bar path with two personnels we know it’s a Grand Staff and that is something that piano music is written on. We also said that the treble cleff is where the high notes are written and the bass clef is where the low-spirited mentions are written.The right hand usually plays treble clef notes the left hand usually plays bass clef notes.

Here you can see I have shown two examples of a line note and two examples of a space mention. So , now it’s time for you to practice drawing these. Get out your pencil and describe some notes making sure that each one of these has the line moving right through the middle-of-the-road of the mention. Build assured that your not squishing it like this or squishing it like this..this makes it difficult to read. Preserve your mentions centered on the line. And you are able to practice outlining some space tones and again keep your notes centered between these two cables These one are looking good. here’s a bad example where I’ve gone over this pipeline and here’s another bad example where I’ve gone over this line and here’s a bad example where I didn’t touch the lines at all. So to continue efforts to build your mentions touching the lines on both sides. Then we are capable of glean the 5 tones going up on each cable of the staff members simply to help us recognize that tones will be moving in different directions up or down. And here we have the four space tones so plow ahead and print out( if you haven’t already) this worksheet.

Read through the information make sure you understand that all we watch any portions of the video that you might need re-explaining and do the written work. The Ray Charles 12-Bar Blues Piano Lick – Piano Lesson

Today’s lesson is on a Ray Charles blues progression from the song What I’d Say. This song features a lot of really cool stuff, we’ve got a sweet bass line in the left hand. We got some cool kind of pulsing chord movements in the right, and then we’ve got an awesome little (blues piano music) lick that caps off the whole thing. So we’re gonna look at each part of those. So let’s start at the beginning with that bass line. The bass line’s really simple. It consists of, again it’s this 12-bar pattern. It’s in the key of E. (piano chord) So that means we have three chords to work with. We got an E chord.

(piano note) We got an A. (piano note) And we got a B. (piano note) So that the one, four, five, and the progression of notes is this. (blues piano music) So that’s the pattern, it’s gonna be the same interval jumps regardless of what note you’re on. So the interval jumps are, we have a one. Then we got two fives. (piano notes) And then we have a seven. (piano note) And then we have a octave. (piano note) So one, five, five, seven, octave. (blues piano music) So that same pattern takes its way up a fourth jump to the A. (blues piano music) Back to E. (blues piano music) Then to B. (blues piano music) Then to A. (blues piano music) And then jumps back down to E. (blues piano music) So here’s that whole progression in the left hand from top to bottom. (blues piano music) All right so that’s a super cool sounding versatile bass line.

You hear that kind of thing in a lot of piano music. It’s a great way to just anchor your rhythm in the left hand. Things get a little more complicated when we get the right hand in. It’s kind of this weird polyrhythmic pulse thing. So I’m gonna go really really slow with the left and the right to show what notes line up with what and what notes kind of push, push the other hands sort of in a slightly offset way. Here it is really really slow, this pattern. (slow piano music) So it’s kinda this little hop, skip, jump thing. But the way that I like to think about this is what chord notes are lining up with what bass line notes? So first of all the right hand is playing basically an E triad.

(piano note) This is an E triad in second inversion, so here’s your root position. (piano notes) So that’s our main kind of home base shape here. But it’s an E seven chord that we wanna be implying, so that means we also want to be (piano notes) working with this D note here. If you look back at this bass line it goes (slow piano music) so we play this (piano note) E in the bass all by itself. And then we play (piano note) the first of our B with the triad on top. (slow piano music) And then we kind of mimic in both our hands we mimic this (piano music) B jump, so watch this really slowly. (slow piano music) So notice how (slow piano music) I’m keeping in mind that both hands use (piano music) those two notes at the same time, ’cause that kind of gives your mind a break from that hand independence where you’re having to put one hand in front of the other, because after these two notes (piano notes) this E chord is gonna hit (piano chord) before the octave baseline hits.

So listen for that. (blues piano music) So notice how I’m kinda popping this (piano note) before this hits. (blues piano music) So kind of a weird sensation to get your hands under. It’s one of those things where if you take it really slow and kind of guide it the way I’m teaching it here, before long you’ll just sort of get this pulse in your hands and then you’ll all of a sudden, you won’t even really be thinking about it. I find I make the mistakes when I’m thinking too much about what the pattern is, versus just kind of feeling it out and trusting that you’ve done the practice work. So that’s the general pattern. That pattern lasts throughout the whole progression. So when you take the progression up to the four chord (piano chords) your shape in the right hand’s gonna change a little bit to reflect that. So it’s gonna go from this E seven shape (piano notes) and now it’s gonna play these notes, kind of making an A nine chord.

(piano notes) So that consists of notes B, C sharp, E, and G. (piano notes) And (piano notes) so that is how that shape is reflected in the four chord. (piano music) There it is. (piano music) And then we get this five chord that uses that sweet lick. (piano music) So I’m gonna break down what that lick is, because when I learned to play this way, totally changed my life on the piano. So (piano notes) our five chord is just a C, or pardon me, a B seven chord. (piano chord) So that consists in the right hand here I’m playing D, I’m playing D sharp and I’m playing A. (piano notes) And then that riff is based on the E pentatonic scale.

So here it is really slow. (slow piano music) So again, even slower. (slow piano music) So it all kind of hinges on these (piano notes) on the A and the B note. So it sorta starts on A, (piano note) and then we do this really awesome thing that I encourage you all to really practice and listen out for. It does this sort of grace note, which is like this slide between the A and B, using this B flat. So rather than going (piano notes) rather than kind of like jumping around from the keys, you kind of slide up.

It’s like almost a piano version of bending a note. (piano notes) So all I’m doing is I have my pointer finger and my middle finger here. I’m kind of landing on my pointer finger and then slipping my middle finger from this B flat to the B natural. (piano notes) So (piano music) So yeah I’m (piano note) doing that quick little lick there and then I’m moving up to play my D and E.

(piano notes) So that’s D, E, and then I’m using again this little slippy technique here from the B flat to the A. (piano note) G, E, D. So from the five chord here. (piano music) Then to the one. (piano music) Right, so that sounds pretty awesome. It’s a really distinctive riff. Ray Charles uses it but you can use it too. It’s just using that pentatonic scale, very very common. Again, this is just a 12 bar blues. This is a great song to use to learn how to work with chord shapes in the blues progression and work with kind of this rock feel and the bass line there. So I’m gonna play this whole progression one more time and listen out for that polyrhythmic pattern in both hands and then check out that riff.

(blues piano music) All right so have fun practicing that. It’s a little challenging. Just start off with that bass line. That bass line enough will get you going, feeling comfortable and confident. And then slowly, really slowly combine both your hands together. Maybe work on that riff as a separate thing to get that technique down too. That’s it for this lesson.
